A long exposure smoothed the choppy, windblown waters of Lake Hanson, near Alexandria, SD earlier this month. I really liked how the piece of driftwood was weathered and colored by the last light of the day.

There have been a lot of clouds and rain this May in Eastern SD. Typically that doesn't mean there are a lot of opportunities for seeing the sun late in the evening, which is one of the things I enjoy doing the most in photography... That is trying to capture that magic light at twilight time. I've learned to watch the sky a few hours before sunset to see how it is shaping up as well as keep a camera always handy and ready in my vehicle when out and about. So, here are my best offereings from 3 different nights this may. Click on each image for a larger file to view and enjoy!
On the same evening as the above driftwood shot, I happened to notice one of the larger snapping turtles I have ever seen in the wild lumbering away from the water. Naturally I went and introduced myself (it is not very often that wildlife moves slower than I do). The turtle was shy but did allow me to use it as foreground in this shot of the colors of the western sky after the sun had set.

The next two shots were taken north of Montrose, SD last week. I really liked the old barn set against the colored clouds lit by the sun that had already sunk below the horizon.

This was from last night just a few miles north west of Sioux Falls very near Crook's SD. All three shots are taken from roughly the same location. The first looking South and a little East. The middle shot looking West and and little North. The last shot was taken a little later in the evening with a telephoto lens pretty much looking the same direction as the middle shot. The church that is silhouetted in against the sky is Benson Lutheran I believe.
