May Miscellany

This hour long exposure on a very dark, starry evening at Oakwood Lake State Park illustrates the earth's rotation by showing star trails around Polaris, or the North Star. The cabin is the historic "Ole Mortimer's Cabin" that sits within the park which is near Bruce, SD.

May is nearly over and I wanted to share some of the images that I've captured that don't really fit into any other category other than I shot them all in May. Click on each image for a larger file to view and thanks for stopping by!

Last weekend was open house at the state parks in South Dakota with free fishing and no entrance fees. A father was taking his kids on sailboat rides at Oakwood Lake state park and I really liked the clouds in the background so I captured a few images. A very peaceful scene.

It had rained earlier in the day and I stumbled across an interesting plant. I thought the pattern, texture and vivid green was striking with the added rain droplets.

Here is a shot of the Big Sioux River (looking North) taken from the Highway 34 bridge east of Egan, SD. I dug out some old techniques in Photoshop tonight to get a "faux" infrared black and white look for it. When done right, there is just something really striking about infrared photography that I love!

On my travels this month I came upon this old Tom turkey that was slowly crossing the road and showing off for his hens. Usually these guys are skittish and run like crazy around humans but this one was strutting his stuff, puffing his feathers and gobbling away. Unfortunately it was late in the day and he was in the shadows of a tree belt and walking away from me so I didn't get the shots I would have liked, but still fun to see anyway.
