Winter Sunset

Common reed grass backlit by the setting mid-February sun.

One thing about winter in South Dakota is that there are many opportunities to see some amazing light around sunset and sunrise. Of course, SD is known for great sunsets, but there is something about the winter light that makes them even more interesting. Here are a few shots from a couple of different evenings in the last 10 days or so. Click on the image for a larger file to view and thanks for dropping by.

A stand of cottonwoods lean over a westbound road just north of Ellis, SD.

Tall reed grass below the Lake Vermillion Dam provide interesting silhouettes to the setting sun.

I shot these this evening and I was hoping for a lot of color but only the cloud at the top of the photo was cooperating. On the second photo below I made my way a few feet into the reed grass bed to shoot nearly strait up as the cloud was almost overhead just a few minutes after the first shot and the color was rapidly changing.
